Master of Civil Engineering SOP

Statement of Purpose

It is a privilege to have the chance to submit my Statement of Purpose to the Australian High Commission for my plan to study Master of Engineering  (Major in Civil) in city name for Feb intake 20… at University name.

Introduction

I am Applicant’s Name son of Mr. Father Name and Mrs. Mother Name. My date of birth is DOB and my passport number is number. My relationship status is married and my spouse name is Spouse Name. My permanent address was address and currently living in current address. I am a graduated Civil Engineer and wish to continue my higher education at an International University. So, I want to pursue a Master in Engineering (Major in Civil) from Western Sydney University, Australia.

Academic Background

I have completed School Leaving Certificate (SLC) from School situated in address with first division with score in the year date of completion. Since my childhood, I aimed to be a successful engineer so I decided to study a three-year course of Diploma in Civil Engineer from School affiliated with CTEVT (Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training) located in address and completed with first division score in date of completeion. Then I passed Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from College name affiliated with Tribhuwan University with first division (score) in date of completion. After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I realized that a Bachelor’s degree is not enough to satisfy myself as a successful engineer. Eventually, I wish to get an International Master’s Degree in engineering and started researching it. For an International Degree, I attended the IELTS exam on test date, and scored an overall score of score with no less than 6.0 in each band.

Reason for Not Choosing Nepal

Basically, after researching for my course I got to know that the quality of higher education in Nepal is far behind than other countries like Australia, UK, and USA. Though Masters in Civil Engineering courses are available at 1st University, 2nd University, and 3rd University. They lack in delivering practical and field knowledge which is very much important in our technical field. The education system here in Nepal is less practical and due to a lack of resources and exposers, it cannot deliver a good experience to a student which will lead his/her career. It therefore makes it more difficult for the students to deal with the outside world. There are just a few universities and colleges that offer the course I’ve chosen, and there aren’t many places available. Also, admission is done through only entrance including a quota system in it. The education system is affected by instable politics and disturbance in regular classes due to different strikes. Besides, I learned throughout my bachelor’s degree that due to poor administrative management from the university, test schedules and result publishing are delayed, which eventually results in extra academic years being required to finish the degree in Nepal. For the reasons listed above, I think it would be best for me to pursue my master’s degree abroad.

Reasons for not choosing UK, USA, and other countries

I have decided to study in Australia due to its long history of providing a high-quality education as well as many other reasons. I also considered the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Germany, and Norway, among others. When compared to the USA and UK, Australia is not only a more pleasant and secure location to live, but it also has lower accommodation costs. My parents’ fears have been heightened by the daily news stories of violence in the United States; as a result, my parents have strongly urged that I do not choose to pursue further education in USA. Additionally, in the United States, students are expected to do well on timed exams such as the SAT, GRE, GMAT which is time consuming. Also, it takes three years to get a master’s degree in the United States, and the fees are generally very costly. I have found some universities that offer similar courses but have higher annual tuition fees such as 1st University – USD 30,760, 2nd University – USD 50,910, 3rd University – USD 74,540, 4th University – USD 62,433. However, I can finish the same degree in only two years in Australia, which will save me an entire year’s worth of time as well as fees, living costs, and so on. Whereas Australia is not only a secure country, but it also just requires one test result in the form of an IELTS/PTE score. After United States, the prefered destination for foreign students is the United Kingdom. But due to the relatively high cost of both school and living, it will be challenging for students to be able to finance the degree. 1st University – GBP 30,810, 2nd University – GBP 31,750, 3rd University – GBP 29,861, 4th University – GBP 28,795 are some universities in UK that provide master in civil engineering but it is costly. In addition, in contrast to the nations of Europe and countries such as Japan, China, and other such countries, there is no language barrier in Australia. One may acquire English language skills quickly and with little effort in Australia. India was not a decent option for me since I believed that I would not have the necessary foreign experience there due to the similarities in the languages and cultures of the countries there. The climate in Canada was another factor that led me to reject the idea of relocating there. The very lowest temperature may be found over there. Besides, I relatively found that the universities of Canada require higher IELTS score and mostly have 12 months courses for Masters. With regards to above reasons, I chose Australia as my study destination.

Reasons to choose Australia

During my research, I collect various information about Australia which are explain below.
Australia offers a better quality of life with a suitable cost of living and a part-time job. Australia is known for good security for students than other countries. As Australia is a peaceful country without any conflicts and crimes, students feel more secure and safe. Australia is the 10th happiest country in the world with friendly natives which will be easy for students to adapt to their new life throughout their studies in Australia. Climatic condition is also one important thing that should be considered while going abroad for study and Australia has a climate condition similar to Nepal which I am used to and won’t bother me anymore.
Australia has maintained its position on the list of one of the top most desired country to pursue higher education worldwide with a strong reputation in the education system. A Master in Engineering from Australia will help me to stand on the shoulders of giants as I can get a lot of resources with modernized technology and well-experienced people that can help me to acquire fruitful knowledge before taking further steps towards the real-world worksites in engineering fields. I discover myself definite that graduating Master’s in Engineering from Australia will upgrade my portfolio moreover; it will be the perfect step for my academics as well as a future career. I will get a chance to hunt and answer most of my unanswered curiosity regarding civil engineering industries with a proper mentor during the course period which will forecast me a direction or a path to my future career. Another main reason is that the degree acquired in Australia is globally recognized. So, due to these reasons, I have chosen Australia over my home country for my further higher education.
Australia also has an international student-friendly education policy. One of the main reasons to study in Australia is their facilities for international students, Australia’s organizations such as the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) maintain the standard of the Institutions providing the education for foreign students. The government has formulated the ESOS act which outlines the rights and responsibilities of three parties i.e., student, education provider, and the government. Tuition fee Protection Service (TPS) guarantees a refund of tuition fee if in case education provider is suspended or shut down. Australia also has made a health insurance policy named Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) which covers specific health expenses for an international student but such policy is also not offered by other countries.

Reason for choosing Sydney

I have decided to study in Sydney as it has huge diversity among the students where I will be studying with students with different languages, cultures, and traditions from around the world. Many impressive stretch suburb beaches provide mood refreshing environment where people can stay seaside picnics; relax in sun after an invigorating swim in the ocean. Nevertheless, the great climate, world-class study options, and affordable quality education for international students are other fine reasons to study in Sydney where I can enjoy a diverse climate, and culture with a combination of quality education.

Reasons to Choose Western Sydney University

Before choosing Western Sydney University for my further study, I went through various study forums of universities taking into account my qualifications and desired courses such as link one, link two, link three, etc. There are many good universities in Sydney city such as 1st University, 2nd University, 3rd University, 4th University and so on. Among them, I choose Western Sydney University (WSU), Master in Engineering (Major Civil) for various reasons after research. First of all, the course I have chosen is available at an affordable cost including a scholarship at WSU. So, I want to enroll in WSU as I found it a bit suitable for my study. WSU has A$ ………. per annual which is more affordable than other universities i.e., list fee of other universities. On top of that, WSU is offering a Multi-Year Scholarship to the value of $6,000 each year for two years in my course.
Not to mention, WSU is well-reputed University for providing quality education with a proper practical-based learning system. My course is taught at Parramatta City Campus Sydney, Australia which is linked with good transportation of railways as well as roadways. After completion of the course, WSU will prepare graduates for a dynamically developing and changing technological environment, allowing graduates to stay at the forefront of the engineering world. After graduation from this course, graduates will emerge with provisional accreditation as the professional Engineer by Engineers Australia (EA) and are eligible to apply for full membership of Engineers Australia.  I am thus quite delighted that I chose this university.

Reasons for choosing the Masters of Engineering (Major in Civil)

My ambition to become a civil engineer has been in me from childhood. The education environment that was in my young age played a vital role in my aim to become a Civil Engineer. I have started my civil engineering study through Diploma in Civil Engineering (DCE). More than studying I was enjoying my course so after completing my DCE course I decided to do Bachelor in Civil Engineering. I completed my Bachelor’s from one of the best universities in Nepal, Tribhuwan University. The desire of becoming a successful Civil Engineer has already been rooted deeply in me, Thus, I am very confident in myself and determined to achieve it. With this clear point, I decide to do a Master of Engineering (Major in Civil) from Western Sydney University (WSU), Sydney with Globally recognized degree. Master of Engineering (Major in Civil) course covers the fields of structural design, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, together with infrastructure design and environmental engineering. Graduates will work in the fields of design, construction and management of engineering structures. Projects may cover residential and commercial buildings, highways and airports, water supply and sewerage schemes, etc.

Family and Financial Background

I have a small family of five members including my parents, elder Sister, my spouse and myself. Regarding my financial part, father, mother, my elder sister and my father-in-law are my financial sources for aboard study. My father is a job position and also has been working as a job position at Company name and receives NRS …… annually as basic salary including other benefits as per rules of organization. Also, my mother is job position of company name and earns NRS…….. annually.  Besides that, my mother has a saving of NPR …… in name of Bank. Being the youngest child of my family, they will be funding my all expenses during my stay in Australia. In addition, also to support my study in Australia. my spouse will also be travelling with me as a dependent which will help me emotionally and personally while staying at Australia.

Future career plan after completing the intended program

As today’s world is a developing world, and Civil Engineering plays a major role in every development such as highways, buildings, hydropower, skyscrapers, cable-car, airport, irrigation, tunnels, etc. This demonstrates that the scope of Civil Engineering is quite broad over the world, and significantly more often in developing countries. There is a rapid increment in the need and demands of Civil Engineers here in Nepal as compared to that of developed country like Australia. So, it will be easy for me to get a job in different sectors after graduation in a post like Structural Engineer, water engineer, site supervisor, structural designer, etc. This degree will open the doors of Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transport Engineering, Hydropower Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering and much more.
Regarding the context of Nepal, it is a developing country. Civil Engineering is one of the most popular sectors in Nepal. Looking at the current scenario, I believe it is a land of opportunities for civil engineers. A lot of hydropower projects are coming up. Similarly, the roadways projects, drinking water projects, tunneling are also running in full pace. The market for civil engineers is huge in Nepal where Engineers are required for various construction projects, public service commission, research department, transportation, structural and building design, and water resource projects. A lot of NGOs and INGOs hire civil engineers in good quantity for several rural infrastructure development projects.

These are amongst the most rewarding profession in Nepal. Nepal needs more skilled manpower for development. So, after my graduation, I will be able to contribute to the development of Nepal. I want to take full use of my time in Australia to learn as much as possible, and then apply that knowledge when I return to Nepal.
Regarding my career plan, I will be looking for job in any of NGO/INGO or government projects where my initial salary will be around NRS…. per month. And gradually increases to more than NRS ……. monthly. I can even have an opportunity of becoming Project Manager after working for 10 years with a salary more than NRS ……….. (source link). With the determination of developing Nepal as an infrastructurally abled country, I will implement my competence, experience, and knowledge at optimum level. I want my country to develop faster so I also have to contribute to it. I always thought about it as a strong patriotism for my country that resides inside me.

Incentives to return to Nepal

The reason behind studying in Australia is only to gain innovative ideas, international experiences, technical skills, and a globally recognized degree that will help me to serve for development of my home country Nepal. I admit and respect the hard work and struggles my parents and family members have done to provide me with the quality education for me to set a higher position in a society where many unprivileged and unfortunate children are lacking basic education. My parents have been generous, caring, and the perfect role model for me. I have many responsibilities towards my family as well as I have a strong bonding with my family and relatives. So, maintaining a strong relationship with my family and relatives and my responsibilities towards my parents are the major reason for mine to return to Nepal. Besides this, my parents’ have my big dream to see me as a successful Engineer in my own country Nepal. For that reason, I prefer to take every possible advantage of this golden opportunity to acquire a great future in Nepal after completing a Master’s in Engineering from a highly profiled University.
